Exquisite French Faience Antique Ironstone Polychrome Hand-painted Flat Edge Soup Plate "Assiette Creuse" in French.   The model is called "STRASBOURG" and is famous in France as the original version of the plate which dates back to the 1700s was created and painted by Joseph Hannong. Then over the year many famous makers in France hand-painted the famous pattern in many variations. This one was made by Faiencerie of Clairefontaine, an old Abbey located in the Haute Sâone department and is currently occupied by the psychiatric hospital of St Remy (production between1804 and 1932).

The ivory cream ceramic is decorated in yellow, blue, red and green, with a romantic decor of lovey garden flowers and a butterfly in the foliage. Each signed by paint on back side with : « 5 Strasbourg » and a number. Since they are hand-painted not one is exactly the same as each plate pattern has the same centerpiece floral arrangement but the 3 side flowers are different. I have 6 different centerpiece patterns as shown in the photo collages as follows:

Pattern 1: Side Centerpiece of Red Tulip with small boutique of yellow rose and blue flowers surrounding and there are 3 other smaller flowers on the edge of the plate.
Pattern 2: Similar to Pattern 2 but the 3 other smaller flowers on the edge are different styles and colors.
Pattern 3: Side Centerpiece of Red, Yellow & Blue Flowers and there are 3 other smaller flowers on the edge of the plate.
Pattern 4: Side Centerpiece of Red Rose with small boutique of blue and yellow follows surrounding and there are 3 other smaller flowers on the edge of the plate.
Pattern 5: Side Centerpiece of Red Tulip with small boutique of 3 yellow flowers surrounding and there are 3 other smaller flowers on the edge of the plate.
Pattern 6: Similar to Pattern 5 but the 3 other smaller flowers on the edge are different styles and colors.
Pattern 7: Side Centerpiece of Red, Yellow & Blue Flowers and there are 3 other smaller flowers on the edge of the plate.

I own a lot of plates but these are unique and the hand-painted colors and designs are similar timeless and beautiful. I wish my husband would let me keep these. A real gem.

PLEASE NOTE: I I have 7 Plates in stock but the price is for ONE 1 Plate. The listing is programmed to allow you to select a quantity you wish to purchase and by pattern #.

I have Dinner Plates in the same model and patterns sold separately.  On my home page search STRASBOURG in the search field.

--- Condition ---

In lovely rustic vintage condition. As these item is antique and more than 100 years old, there are signs of aging such as some pattern bleeding/paint marks/paint glazing bubbles in certain spots in the pattern, some areas of discoloration on the front and back edges of the plates, manufacturing marks and surface spots, some utensil marks/surface scratches, manufacturing /glazing marks on the surface, there are areas around the edges of wearing down of the protection glaze or marks/areas where there is no varnish (surface not smooth or brown), there is decorative surface crazing and more detail by pattern below:
Pattern 1 - There is a manufacturing line crack on the back inner edge
Pattern 2 - There are small aged chips on the back edge not visible from the front.
Pattern 3 - There are more visible manufacturing marks spots on the front edge.
All blemishes shown in the photo collages. However I believe that these decorative blemishes tell a story and just gives the plates more charm and character. Please ask me if you are unsure. Please use ZOOM to review the details of each photo especially the photo collages.

**Special Note about aged Porcelain**
If you are not accustomed to this ‘look’, google crazing and the aging process of porcelain. The Japanese use crazing to add an artistic look to their pieces whereas antiques go through the natural aging process. Crazing is cracking in the surface of the plate due to use sometimes it's even and is called the crackle look and other times it is random.

These items are old, were used and were manufactured at a time when processes were less under control as today. Therefore, in addition to the defects identified and reported in the ad, slight dimensional differences or deviations in the color or in the decoration between the different parts could be noted. Besides, some little marks or small manufacturing imperfections such as minor defects in the glaze or in the varnish etc., may also be observed.
