Stunning French Antique Hand Carved Wood Hanging Cheese Grater Box. Large Handmade Primitive Wooden Mountable Cheese Carving Box.
It was used in the late 1800s/1900s to grate cheese at a dining table. It can be stored on the table, upright for display or there is an area at the top where you can place it on the wall with a large nail or screw. For use you can put a small bowl inside the box then grate the cheese to serve to your guests.
You would have never known it was this beautiful when I found it as the owner had not touch it for many years. I clean it with dish soap and water then finished it with 100% natural miss mustard seed hemp oil to bring it back to original condition and enhance the detail and grain in the wood.
The original owner told me it was carved and made in wood by his grandfather and I did not catch what type of wood was used as he spoke too fast in French. Regardless, it is a piece of art with all the imperfections in the hand carved detail. You can't reproduce this look It has lots of charm!

In lovely vintage condition. As this item is antique and more than 100 years old, there are signs of aging such as distressed marks/cracks/tiny holes and wearing in the wood, iron and metal pieces. There are 2 nails fastened on top of the grater that can be easily removed for cleaning then refastened as you can notice by all the holds underneath the grater. It's a sturdy, solid piece and can be used and I tested it for use and it works however I would use it for display and story telling purposes. All decorative blemishes shown in the photos so please look closely using zoom. I will be happy to provided additional photos and details upon request.
